は (Topic Marker)

A は B ですMarks the topic of the sentence. Creates a mental pause: "As for A, B is true."

わたしはがくせいです。(I am a student.)

たなかさんはにほんじんです。(Tanaka is Japanese.)

です (Copula)

A は B ですPolite copula meaning "is/am/are". Placed at the end of a sentence to assert identity or description.

じゃありません (Negative Copula)
